Rhythms of the diaspora

where Rhythms connect, cultures Thrive!

At Rhythms of the Diaspora, our mission is to empower and connect people of all ages to their African and Caribbean heritage through dance. We create accessible and affordable workshops, performances, and events that celebrate the richness of our culture. Through movement, we foster pride, community, and a deep-rooted understanding of the rhythms that tell our ancestral stories.

Beyond the studio, we aim to start meaningful conversations about cultural identity, history, and the importance of representation. By working to diversify the dance curriculum within the UK, we challenge Eurocentric narratives in dance education and create more inclusive spaces for African and Caribbean movement traditions to thrive.

  1. Cultural Pride – We honor and celebrate the rich dance traditions of Africa and the Caribbean, ensuring they are passed down to future generations. Through movement, we keep our history alive and strengthen our cultural identity.

  2. Community & Connection – Dance is more than movement; it’s a language that brings people together. We create spaces where people of all ages can connect, share stories, and build lasting relationships through culture.

  3. Authenticity & Representation – We are committed to teaching and showcasing African and Caribbean dance in its purest form. By working with skilled practitioners and educators, we challenge Eurocentric narratives and push for greater diversity in the UK dance curriculum.

  4. Empowerment – We believe dance is a powerful tool for self-expression and confidence. Our workshops inspire individuals to embrace their identity, feel proud of their heritage, and take up space unapologetically.

  5. Accessibility & Inclusion – Culture should be for everyone. We ensure that our programs remain affordable, welcoming, and open to all, making it easier for people to engage with and celebrate African and Caribbean dance.

meet the founder

Renee miller-reid is the passionate founder of Rhythms of the Diaspora, a dance ORGANISATION dedicated to connecting young black people to their African and Caribbean roots. As a proud Jamaican, renee has always felt a deep connection to the cultural power of dance and the importance of preserving it for future generations. With over 5 years of experience in both African and Caribbean dance styles, renee has performed, taught, and collaborated with renowned artists across the globe.

Throughout her career, renee noticed a gap in the accessibility of authentic cultural dance education, especially for young people in the UK. This inspired the creation of Rhythms of the Diaspora, where she could bring together their expertise and passion for cultural preservation. renee has built a strong network of experienced and diverse teachers, all experts in their respective African and Caribbean dance traditions, to help deliver high-quality, immersive learning experiences to students of all levels.

Through workshops, performances, and community events, renee aims to provide a platform that celebrates African and Caribbean traditions, fosters empowerment, and builds a strong sense of cultural pride. With a focus on inclusivity, representation, and education, renee is committed to reshaping the narrative around dance and culture, creating opportunities for people of all ages to explore their roots and connect with others.
